Someone thinking about telling her parents that she just found out she's pregnant

Why You Should Confirm Your Test Results With a Medical Professional

You’ve taken a home pregnancy test, but you may still have questions. Could a negative result be too early? If the result is positive, what should you do next?

A medical appointment gives you a chance to discuss your result, understand whether additional testing is needed, and learn more about your pregnancy.

At Options Clinic, we offer no-cost, confidential, lab-quality pregnancy testing and ultrasounds after a positive pregnancy test.

Understand What Your Test Result Means

Home and clinic urine pregnancy tests both detect human chorionic gonadotropin (hCG), a hormone made by the developing placenta after a fertilized egg implants. Home tests can be highly accurate when used correctly, but timing and instructions matter.

Testing before enough hCG has built up, drinking large amounts of fluid beforehand, or reading the result outside the instructed time window can make results less reliable. An expired test shouldn’t be used.

At your appointment, our staff can discuss when you tested, review your menstrual history, and explain whether repeat testing may be appropriate. A lab-quality test in a clinic setting removes much of the guesswork that can come with testing at home.

Know When to Follow Up

A positive home pregnancy test is usually accurate. False positives are rare, but they can happen after a very early pregnancy loss, with fertility drugs containing hCG, or with certain ovarian problems or menopause.

A negative result may need another look if your period hasn’t started. Testing too early can produce a negative result even when you’re pregnant, so consider testing again in a few days or a week, or contact a healthcare professional.

If repeated tests are negative and your period still hasn’t arrived, a healthcare professional can look into other possible causes. Talking through your results with a professional helps you know whether to retest, wait, or take the next step.

Learn What a Positive Test Can’t Show

A pregnancy test detects hCG, but it can’t show the pregnancy’s location, how far along you are, or whether the pregnancy appears to be progressing.

An ultrasound can help assess:

  • Gestational age: An estimate of how many weeks pregnant you are
  • Pregnancy location: Whether the pregnancy is inside the uterus
  • Pregnancy progression: Whether cardiac activity and development appropriate for the estimated stage are visible

If the pregnancy is very early, follow-up testing or another scan may be needed before clear answers are available.

Confirming location matters because an ectopic pregnancy develops outside the uterus and can become life-threatening. Severe abdominal or pelvic pain with vaginal bleeding, extreme lightheadedness or fainting, or shoulder pain require emergency care.

Options Clinic provides no-cost ultrasounds, performed under the supervision of our medical director, after a positive pregnancy test with us. If additional medical care is needed, we can refer you to local OB providers. These are details a home test can’t provide on its own, which is why meeting with a medical professional is such an important next step.

Get Answers at Options Clinic

A home pregnancy test is a helpful starting point, but it can’t tell you everything. Meeting with a medical professional can verify your result, explain what it means, and, if you’re pregnant, show whether the pregnancy is in the uterus, how far along you are, and whether the pregnancy appears to be progressing. That information helps protect your health and gives you a clear foundation for whatever comes next.

You can come in with questions about your test result without having your next steps planned. Our staff will review your results, discuss your pregnancy options, and help you learn about available resources.
