If you’ve recently had unprotected sex, you may be wondering how soon you can find out if you’re pregnant.
Waiting for an answer can feel like the longest part of the process. You may be tempted to take a pregnancy test the very next day, hoping for immediate clarity. However, testing too soon can lead to a false-negative result, leaving you with more questions than answers.
Knowing how pregnancy tests work, and when they’re most accurate, can help you get the answers you’re looking for. You can also schedule a no-cost appointment with Options Clinic for lab-quality urine pregnancy testing.Â
Your Body Needs Time Before a Pregnancy Test Can Be Accurate
A pregnancy doesn’t begin the moment you have sex.
If sperm fertilizes an egg after ovulation, the fertilized egg must travel to the uterus and implant in the uterine lining. This process, called implantation, usually happens 6 to 12 days after fertilization.
Only after implantation does your body begin producing human chorionic gonadotropin (hCG), the hormone that pregnancy tests detect.
Because hCG isn’t present immediately after unprotected sex, taking a pregnancy test too early can result in a false negative, even if you’re pregnant.
Wait Until After You’ve Missed Your Period
For the most accurate results, it’s generally best to wait until after you’ve missed your period before taking a pregnancy test.
To improve the accuracy of your test:
- Use your first urine of the morning, when hCG levels are typically the highest.
- Follow the instructions carefully.
- Check the expiration date before using the test.
- If your result is negative but your period still hasn’t started, test again in 48 to 72 hours.
If you have irregular menstrual cycles and aren’t sure when your period is due, consider waiting at least three weeks after unprotected sex before testing. This gives your body enough time to produce detectable levels of hCG if you’re pregnant.
If Your Pregnancy Test Is Positive, Schedule an Ultrasound
A positive pregnancy test tells you that pregnancy hormones are present, but it doesn’t tell you everything you need to know.
That’s why an ultrasound is an important next step. We offer this scan following a positive test at the clinic, and it’s performed under the supervision of our medical director.
An ultrasound can determine:
- Whether the pregnancy is located inside the uterus
- Whether the pregnancy appears to be developing
- Approximately how far along you are
This information is important for protecting your health. For example, an ultrasound can identify an ectopic pregnancy, which occurs when a pregnancy develops outside the uterus and requires immediate medical treatment.
