Someone thinking about what it's going to be like during her pregnancy

What if I Regret Taking the First Abortion Pill?

If you have taken the first abortion pill, there is a small window of time where it may be possible to reverse the process with a protocol called Abortion Pill Reversal (APR). Keep reading to see if abortion pill reversal is an option for your situation.

How Does the Abortion Pill Work?

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration has approved the medication abortion for use up to 10 weeks (70 days) of pregnancy.

The first drug, mifepristone, blocks progesterone—a hormone needed to support a pregnancy. Without progesterone, the pregnancy can no longer continue as the uterine lining breaks down.

Typically taken 24–48 hours later, the second medication, misoprostol, induces uterine cramping and expels the pregnancy from the body. It is between these two that the optimal time for the abortion pill reversal protocol would be.

How Does the Abortion Pill Reversal Work?

Abortion pill reversal (APR) is based on the idea that, because mifepristone blocks progesterone, giving additional progesterone may help support the pregnancy. The goal is to counteract the effects of the first medication before the process continues.

Timing is critical. APR is typically discussed within 24–72 hours after taking mifepristone and before taking the second drug, misoprostol.

In one study, 64% of pregnancies continued after APR was used, with no reported increase in birth defects.
